What’s the first thing you did? Probably picked up the phone with the corporation and asked for an explanation.
Is This a Legitimate Charge?
Now, there are two possibilities, either the charge is legitimate or not. Either the corporation can convince the customer that they are getting something of value for their $7.26, or it can’t.
But if the charge is bogus, or seems to be bogus, what can a customer do? Nobody is going to sue over $7.26. The corporation just gets away with it.
What to do if Charge is Not Legitimate
That is what a class action is all about: addressing illegal or unfair behavior that affects a number of people in exactly the same way.
A Court can look at Tom’s case, determine whether the charge is legitimate, and order the relief necessary to make him whole. If Tom can prove that the corporation placed this charge on many customers’ bills, then the Court can make the corporation return everyone’s money and stop charging the fee in the future.
This kind of situation is what the procedural tool called a class action is designed to address.
